4 Safety Checks You Must Do Before Reopening Your Site in 2026

four site safety checks: hard hat inspection, fire extinguisher pressure check, first aid kit expiry review, and gas detector calibration test.

Welcome back to work! 2026 is here, operations are restarting, but is your equipment actually ready?

Most managers check fuel and machinery, but forget the “silent” safety gear that expires while sitting on the shelf.

Here is a quick 4-step checklist to ensure your team is safe and compliant from Day 1.

Checklist #1: The Hard Hat “Clock” Check

The Myth: “Plastic lasts forever.”

The Truth: Hard hats have an expiry date (usually 2-5 years depending on the brand/material). UV rays and heat degrade the shell.

The Action: Flip the helmet over. Look for the “Clock” symbol molded into the plastic.

Most helmets feature a raised circular marking moulded into the shell. The year is displayed inside the circle, and an arrow points to the month of manufacture. Other helmets may feature the manufacturer date in a MM/YYYY or M/YY format

Checklist Item #2: The Fire Extinguisher “Green Zone”

The Myth: “It hasn’t been used, so it’s fine.”

The Truth: Pressure drops over time, and powder can settle and cake at the bottom.

The Action: Check the Service Tag: Was it serviced in the last 6 months?

Check the Gauge: Is the needle in the Green Zone?

If the needle is in the Red, call us for immediate servicing.

Checklist Item #3: The First Aid Kit “Expiry Audit”

The Myth: “Bandages don’t expire.”

The Truth: Sterile items (eyewash, antiseptic, wound dressings) absolutely expire. Using them after the date can cause infection.

The Action: Open the box. Throw away anything expired. Restock the basics.

Checklist Item #4: The Gas Detector “Drift” Test

The Myth: “It turns on, so it works.”

The Truth: Sensors drift over time. A detector that hasn’t been calibrated in 6+ months is lying to you.

The Action: Check the “Next Calibration Due” sticker. If it’s a 2025 date, send it to our lab today. Don’t let a small expiry date cause a big accident in 2026.
